Lukesland worth an autumn visit
Already well-known for its wonderful spring colour, the rich variety of trees and shrubs at Lukesland Gardens, Ivybridge also makes it well worth visiting this autumn. The shelterbelt of beeches, planted by the Victorians to protect this 24-acre garden from Dartmoor winds, turns a glorious gold, while more exotic species such as acers, cornus and gingko reflect their fiery reds and oranges in the pools of the Addicombe Brook. Single species groves include Clerodendron and Cercidyphyllum japonicum, with their delicious scent of toffee apples and some fine Taxodium distichum glow vivid orange in various corners of the garden. The Howell family, who run Lukesland, serve up seasonal soups and cakes in the tea room, often made with vegetables and fruit from Lukesland's kitchen garden. Dogs are welcome on a lead.
