What's On: Exbury

Autumn colour on show at Exbury

Exbury, named as one of the top ten gardens in Britain to visit for autumn colour, has joined with the Royal Horticultural Society to offer a day devoted to it. Head gardener John Anderson will lead a tour of the 200 acre gardens, showing trees and their special properties on Wednesday November 4. He’ll give tips on propagating, growing and looking after trees.
The Festival of Autumn Colour, with special trails to the hot spots, runs until the gardens close on November 8. Families following the autumn trail will see the tupelo trees (Nyssa sylvatica) by the Jubilee Pond and along the azalea drive. Other trees and shrubs to look out for include the swamp cypress (Taxodium distichum), the sweet gum (Liquidamber styraciflua), the scarlet oak (Quercus coccinea) and the shrubby Disanthus cercidifolius. More eye-catching colour comes from clumps of Enkianthus, a bushy shrub with dense clusters of leaves that glow purple-red in autumn.
Hundreds of Japanese maples turn to blazing autumn fire in the wooded walks and by the cascades and ponds. Exbury now holds the NCCPG National Collections of Nyssa and Oxydendrum, the latter a rarely seen tree that turns crimson and gold.

RHS and Exbury Autumn Foliage and Colour from 10am-3pm Wednesday November 4, including tea and coffee and a soup and sandwich lunch: RHS members, £21.95, non-members £26.95; please book on 023 8024 5750
