Focus on Garden Clubs and Societies

Minehead Garden Club

Our club meets at the Church Hall in Bancks Street, Minehead on the last Friday of the month at 7.30pm. There is no meeting in August or December. We have speakers each month on a variety of subjects

Please come along to our meetings and meet fellow gardeners. We look forward to seeing you.

For further information please telephone the secretary, Mrs Barbara Brady on 01643 705108.

Mudford Gardening Club

Mudford, near Yeovil, has a young but thriving gardening club. Monthly meetings are either a talk (in the village hall) from an expert speaker or a visit to a stunning garden in our area. We also have quiz nights, parties and competitions.

We are always delighted to welcome new members; we also welcome guests. With a wealth of experience, there is always someone who can answer a gardening query.

For further information contact secretary Aileen Wilkinson on 01935 850416.

Stowey Gardeners

The aim of our society, according to the constitution, ‘shall be to offer to all gardeners, whatever their particular enthusiasms, a chance to get together with other gardeners in the locality, to their joint advantage and mutual interest’.

We come from the West Somerset village of Nether Stowey and its surrounding area and get together on the third Thursday of each  month (except June, July and August) at 7.30pm in Nether Stowey Village Hall, to hear a speaker and chat over a cup of coffee.

There is a plant table at every meeting, from which plants contributed by members are sold (at trivial prices) for the benefit of club funds. We try to organise a coach trip and an outing in members’cars each summer.

The subscription is £10 for a year, which includes admission to all meetings; visitors pay £3 per meeting for a maximum of two, after which they are expected to join.

For more information please contact our hon. secretary, Mrs Jan Simmonds, on 01278 732917.

The Isle of Wedmore Gardening Club

Our club was formed in 1986 by keen gardeners in the beautiful village of Wedmore on the Somerset Levels. In its early years it was able to attract speakers such as Alan Titchmarsh and Johnny Morris from the BBC Natural History Unit.

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Masonic Hall in Church Street, Wedmore at 7.30pm.New members and visitors welcome. We have over 50 members and a lively, sociable membership. We have two outings a year and a plant sale and coffee morning to raise funds.

For more information or for £5 tickets for Anne Swithinbank’s talk, phone Jill Moreton, chairman, on 01934 713854 or Anne Blandford, secretary, on 01934 713045.

Lydford and District Gardening Club

The Lydford and District Gardening Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month (apart from August) in the Parish Hall of the village of West Lydford. Pleasantly situated on the River Brue between Somerton and Castle Cary, Lydford is where the club meets, but many of the members of this thriving organization come from the adjacent villages of Keinton Mandeville, Barton St David and Babcary.

Meetings begin at 7.15pm and involve a varied range of speakers. During the gatherings members listen politely to the speakers and then show their generosity by offering sage advice to the ‘experts’ on a wide variety of topics.

Coffee and biscuits are then made available to dull the pain of not winning the raffle, yet again!

The club has arrangements with local businesses which allow discount for members and also takes advantage of the reductions offered by Thompson and Morgan when seeds are purchased in bulk.

Visits are organised to local gardens and nurseries as well as places further away, such as Wisley.

For further information please contact Simon Wynn on 01963 240340 or by post, Brueside, High St, West Lydford, TA11 7DB.

Glastonbury Gardeners’ Group

This group, known more simply as 3G, links gardeners and people who grow their own food in the Glastonbury area.

G3 runs events and activities for the local gardening community, including seed and plant swaps; workshops and open gardens. We work co-operatively exchanging our ideas, skills, knowledge, resources and produce.

You can use the electronic notice board to: advertise surplus produce; swap seeds, cuttings, seedlings, plants; borrow tools and books; ask for help, advice and information; and advertise gardening events, both local and national.

To join Glastonbury Gardeners’ Group, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/geethree/ and select Join This Group, or call Avalon Fair Shares on 01458 831118. You will receive postal notification of events.
